There’s now a race to replace Second District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal when she steps down next year.
Lowenthal announced early this month that she would not seek a third term as a write-in candidate. She will compete two full terms, in addition to a partial term, in June 2016.
Tuesday, a release was distributed saying that Jeannine Pearce would announce her candidacy for the seat on Wednesday. Pearce currently serves on the city’s Human Relations Commission. She will make her candidacy official at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Bixby Park, followed by a community picnic.
Pearce was part of the Measure N campaign in 2012, which raised the minimum wage for hotel workers in Long Beach if they were not represented by a union. She also is director of the Long Beach Coalition for Good Jobs and a Healthy Community.
